FIRST- I'm an equalist [a humanist if you would], not a feminist.
I thought i'd make that known.
My part in this Woman's Week is to celebrate the woman and bring up dialogs about women and the situations/art that is around them. This is not to excommunicate men from the subject in any regard. In fact my rant, touches on that, and other ideas of gender stereotyping.
Now in it's rough grammar fubared format [it's certainly not formatted, and very rant like], I give you my views on Sexism on women, and guess what.. on men too.
------------
There are grey areas of objectification of women- which moreso in this society where we face consumerism at all all time high, where everything is to be had and made beautiful for consumption and then tossed to the side looking for the next without looking deeper to the context of what it is we're looking at, or using. To think of a woman as just another "thing" to have, to obtain for sexual gratification, and to be tossed away afterwards without giving credit to; that under the mammary glands, the lack of penis, and that sometimes dolled up look, THAT underneath it all that the woman is as human as a man. [this goes without saying, or at least it should.] There is not much difference between the two sexes. Sexual characteristics, perhaps, but get down to the grit we all need the same things. People will fall into stereotypes, both ways, but are we not all more than just the spoon fed ideas of how we should be? Even men fall into objectification, and the shell that they must be. Just another piece of meat that must obtain money and not cry, because crying is for GIRLS. WOW, to demean a male, you must bring them to the level of a female. What the hell does that say? What is it about our society [which when i say this, i mean the westernized society] that we hold in gridlock certain ideas that keep both sexes down, and kept in a confining box based on sexual stereotypes. To keep humans down so they don't raise up against the powers that be, that YOU will stay in your place that society has deemed necessary for you. You will feel guilt if you are not meeting the expectations. Too girly, you must be a fag. Too manly, you must be a butch. You show neither, what the hell are you? Pat? Even homosexuals are placed into categories so the individual can be boiled down to nothing but a vapid stereotype. Everybody is expected to take their place, and show no interest beyound. Buy the goods we've sold you. Do as you're told. Stay in place.
I'm getting all rambly on a subject that hits both sexes. BUT You can't talk about one sex, and not mention the other and a society thats prone to stereotypes.
----------
And that my friends is what i wanted to say earlier today. It's choppy- yes, but it's the core idea of something larger at hand. I'd love to add more, i'd like to flesh it out into an essay. But I don't have the time. I probably don't have the time to reply to you guys on the matter. But there it is. The idea that there is sexism across the board.. stereotypes.. and things going unsaid.
A start of ideas.

I like my own term of Equalist. Which i'm all about men's rights as well, and still the original feminist ideals of equality, and going towards the idea of individualism [as in being your own self instead of belonging to a set of ideas of how you should be], and the rejection of stereotypes. I'm a humanist, this is how i am. I don't belong to a set philosophy, or a certain branch of feminism.
I agree with you that it's been unfortunate how people view feminism. But I can't say i'm a feminist when i don't think i do fit into that category.

But I am all for equality, Women have been (and still are) wronged and objectified, But men should be entitled to the same rights and responsibilities as a woman (short of maternity leave and whatnot)
While we all are fundamentally the same as humans, just piles of sentient chemicals wrapped up in meat who all want to be treated with love and respect, Dave Barry's observation
"If god did not want us to make gender based generalizations, she would not have given us genders."
Still strikes a mildly ironic truth,
Anyway, thanks for posting this, and I seriously need some sleep now
