character- Good God

Did this piece as a treat for myself for working hard on a mini comic for the past couple of days non-stop.

A return to a theme.

The others:
Dreams in Blood by SpookyChan-little missle- by SpookyChan

The idea of exposure, intimacy, but a lack of being able to share oneself completely. Shame, disgust, lack of openness yet exposed. Sorrow. Hurt. Pain.

Happy early Valentines.

Pinup for Mice Templar #14.
Media- Photoshop

So most of you probably don't know i've been doing coloring on the alt. covers of Mice Templar. I'm always weird about showing off my color work when it's not my lines. (I'm weird like that. Victor Santos does some amazing lines too!) Anyways, Bryan J. L. Glass (writer of Mice Templar, and good friend) asked me to do a pinup inspired by the concept of "The Abyss" (not to be confused with the movie... :P ) He gave me the low down of what was going on in the story, and I wasn't supposed to illustrate that, but it just kind of happened. I actually started off making featureless abstract figures struggling with power, pain, and becoming what they are not... then it turned into Karic and the ant.

Regardless, this was one of the fun pin-ups I got to play with at the time. Probably the best kind of work I can do is the expressive, abstract, crazy, weird, non-rigid work. If i can do something monstery I'm gold. At the time I also got to do a pin-up for Artful Daggers (to be seen...???)-- which had similar expressive lines, insane darkness, and a crazy 3 color scheme. I live for this kind of work.  HIRE ME TO DO THIS. hahaha!

Mice Templar issue 14 (Volume IV) is on sale now! And remember I did coloring on the "B" cover (not pictured in the link.) So if you want a double dose of me...! Also, more importantly, check out Mice Templar! Lots to catch up on!

Well, this is going to take awhile to get used to... hello new-DA. I have been waiting for you.
Hey everybody!

Now, the title of this article is a bit misleading I suppose, but still relevant. I've never really left, but I haven't been as active community-wise, updates, etc. Though i have been posting more artwork.

End result though- I have no truly been around (though i have never stopped reading comments.)

Last time i updated, it was my 10 year ani here- i meant to come back and do a retrospective--- which I felt was difficult since I have nearly 1,000 images here on DA. Picking the best, and moments proved to be a huge epic cataloging of my time here. I didn't and don't have the time like I used to to devote to something like that. :(

In the upcoming months, my comic, The God Machine will be my everything, along with art directing a few titles AND possibly writing a new title. It's not an easy task to manage a million social media places, all of my work, and then DA.

i miss DA. I really do. I've always enjoyed serious feedback/insights into my work and connecting with everybody. I used to make friends here. Heck, i'm still an avid advocate of DA.

Now I no longer have a subscription here- which makes it harder to use DA like I used to... [EDIT: Thanks to WanderingTempest for getting me a sub to DA! You rock the cat's socks, sir!] but despite this-- I'm going to try to update with articles I'll be writing for my PRO blog, update on convention signings, God Machine rough cut pages being submitted here over at TheGodMachineComic (or a new location), and things like this. This is going to be my attempt. Usually when i make blogs like this, i curse myself and end up not returning for awhile. Hopefully this won't be the case.

At anyrate, I hope to return soon--and even have some announcements for all of you!

Take care, and hopefully talk soon!

Chandra Free
Artist | Professional | Varied
United States
Chandra is the creator the graphic novel series, The God Machine, published by Archaia Entertainment.

Born and bred into captivity of Orlando, Florida, Chandra (pronounced CHAN-drah, like Jackie CHAN) can now be found in her present-day home, blissfully away in the land of New York with her writer boyfriend, Drew Gaska. It is here that she concocts her uniquely abstract and elongated art and comics. Intensely interested in the incorporation of psychology into her art, she focuses on the unconscious and human aspects of her characters. In addition to The God Machine, she has worked as a digital painter on the comic series Sullengrey by Ape Entertainment, and as an illustrator on Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock by Archaia. She is also a creative director at the guerrilla studio BLAM! Ventures.

On her off time she considers herself an amateur “Foodie”-- looking for the holy grail of coffees, the most savory bowl of Japanese ramen,
the quintessential green tea item, the most mouth-watering sashimi, and the weirdest food she’s never encountered before-- all on the isle’ of Manhattan.

She’s also an avid Venture Brothers fan, a retro video gamer, collector of arty-indy comics, infrequent participant of the “goth” scene, and girl adventurer!

I apologize. I'm unsure if you get this question often, but I own volume 1 of The God Machine and am in love with it. I often go through it over and over because the artwork is so fantastic and the story so incredibly involving. I was wondering if more volumes have been released. I'm dying to know the rest and want more of your work in my graphic novel collection.
Take care <3

No apologies needed!
-First, thank you! I'm happy that you liked the first volume so much. ^_^
It's been a long time coming but volume 2 is on the way. Working out some things on the future of The God Machine that I did not foresee. But rest assured, the 2nd volume will be coming out, and the volumes to follow will hopefully not take as long afterwards.

Thank you again!

p.s. I love your avatar! You're so pretty! (if you don't mind me saying.)
